“Set Pieces”, February 7-April 15, 2013
Cardi Black Box is proud to announce SET PIECES, an exhibition by artists of Los Angeles by Andrew Berardini & Lauren Mackler
We invited four artists to create many installations which in turn functioned as the location for their work as well as those of other artists.
This idea plays with the myth of Las Angeles, where the imagery often results in the real world and vice versa.
Visually, the so-called “sets,” will be autonomous islands of light in a space otherwise dark, simulating a cinematic effect and giving the feeling of being on a movie set. In many ways, we were inspired by the work of William Leavitt, who recently had a retrospective at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Los Angeles, and whose work often uses theater performances and their stage in an astonishing way to reveal the mundane theatricality of the city. He once told us that his theatrical performances were nothing more than elaborate frames for his paintings.
In these environments there is no presumption of likelihood. May seem like a living soap opera or a ghostly alter-reality. This, like the rest of the art, depends on the artists.
