DORADE 5, SUMMER 2013// THE NEW ELDORADO/DORADE
Artists and artworks move around quite a bit these days. The art world’s structure is now global, dragging oeuvres and creators from Sao Paolo to Basel with stop-overs at Venice and Sharjah along the way. This nomadic caravan of expositions and international art fairs is supplemented by artists’ desire to turn to foreign climes and anchor their practices in a particular geographic context.
There’s been a surge in artists’ residences, workshops, seminars and round tables that seem to be multiplying exponentially with every passing day. These events invariably focus on cultural exchanges; being a resident artist is all about anchoring oneself in the current contemporary art system, just as founding an artists’ residence is tantamount to raising a flag on the art world’s atlas. Couldn’t it be that travel itself has become more than an experience and passed into the realm of artistic medium? This edition of Dorade Magazine seriously ponders this hypothesis by attempting to create a journey in paper format, a trip around the world in 300 pages. It seeks to question and inventory the various forms an artistic journey can encompass.
The mobile residence in the Caucasus (Russia, Armenia and Georgia) that the Dorade Magazine team created along with the guest artist Raphaële Bidault-Waddington during the summer of 2012 served as a base camp for the exploration of the subject.
From a week-end in Rome to an introspective journey, a mini-break, a trip or a dead-end, this edition includes multiple destinations and racks up the air miles, all the while observing that the movement itself makes the work.
Featuring:
Vogue Russia, Georgians and Armenians, Slavs and Tatars, Medea and other Parisiennes, Those Women in Black, Raymond Roussel, Lil’ Kim and Lasagna Del Rey, Linder, Orlan, Diane Pernet and Terre Thaemlitz.
