In conjunction with the exhibition “I am another world.” Artistic Authorship between Deconstruction and (Re)canonization
Sometimes during her last years at graduate school, Zoe Crosher received the photographic collection of her aunt’s friend, Michelle duBois, as a gift. DuBois had been traveling the Pacific Rim as a call girl during the 1970s and 80s. She had also documented her changing appearance, her partners and environments. But these images are also documents of the influence of media-culture on women’s self-image.
Crosher subverts the highly sexualized poses by re-ordering the pictures, by re-photographing them covered in archival dust, by showing the reverse-side. Thereby the photographs become palimpsests with Michelle duBois as their eluding subject.
Zoe Crosher lives and works in Los Angeles/CA. She received her BA in Art&Politics from UC Santa Cruz and her MFA in Photography&Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been shown at MOMA, New York, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, at Dallas Contemporary and at MUHKA, Antwerp. She is currently preparing “The Re-duBois Book”, the fifth volume in a series of artist books on the various stages of the Michelle duBois project published by Aperture.
