Art Basel Crowdfunding Initiative for The Manifest Destiny Billboard Project Kickstarter Campaign!

As you know, I have been working with the non-profit art organization LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) on an incredibly ambitious exhibition entitled The Manifest Destiny Billboard Project that I initiated, am participating in as an artist and co-curating with LAND’s Director and Curator Shamim M. Momin.

The Manifest Destiny Billboard Project is a series of artist-produced billboards and activations that have been unfolding along the I-10 Freeway from Florida to California, concluding in spring 2015. Using approximately 100 billboards total, 10 artists create “chapter” groupings along I-10, each a unique interpretive link to the exhibition thematic. The billboards move through and punctuate the landscape by tracing territorial expansion from east to west, along one of the country’s busiest freeways, concluding in Los Angeles. My particular section around Palm Springs will be launching April 2nd-5th, 2015, if you would like to come join us in the desert!

To mark the culmination of this 20-month and 2,415-mile endeavor, LAND will present a weekend of artist-curated programs in June 2015 in Los Angeles. Venues and organizations throughout the city will collaborate on programming to share each of the 10 artists’ projects, along with new activations and events, to explore the complex thematic of Manifest Destiny, and its repercussions in Los Angeles.

This weekend-long exhibition will take place at various locations throughout Los Angeles, and all will be free and open to the public. Examples of artist-proposed projects and events for the weekend include: a city-wide scavenger hunt, historical site visits, performances, readings, screenings, concerts, panel discussions, and parties.

I am very pleased to announce that as part of the Art Basel Crowdfunding Initiative, LAND will launch a 30-day Kickstarter campaign on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 to raise funds in order to present this weekend-long, city-wide exhibition in Los Angeles.

The Kickstarter will be live to the public at 12:00pm tomorrow, but in advance of that we are asking our key supporters to make a donation to help us start off the campaign strong, with at least 25 backers in advance of the public launch.
